Silver Plume is a town of 134 people. What is it like to live in a place where nothing is happening? I'm getting to the bottom of the question on my mission to understand Small-Town America. One thing's for sure, these places are where the quiet, subtle, natural beauty is, and it feels magical when you've lived without it so long.
This is called a false Western Front, Gentle Reader. Although the roof structure here shown was the cheapest and most easily built technology of the time, peaked ridges on roofs weren't fashionable in the late 1800's: the Italianate style was, and that's the style you see especially in old west towns that were trying to glitz up their main street. The fake flat roof, tall narrow windows like an Italian villa, little pediments or other decor over the windows, decorative border (cornice) at the top and sometimes fake 'stone' looking paint on the boards invite customers to this posh spot. Even back then, folks had their pretenses. Kind of like today's icky and ubiquitous Pseudo-Tuscan look today...?
